IUS GBE Assistant Abas Sezer Successfully Defends Doctoral Dissertation
On Thursday, June 18, 2026, Mr. Abas Sezer, Assistant at the Genetics and Bioengineering (GBE) study program of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (FENS) at the International University of Sarajevo (IUS), successfully defended his doctoral dissertation titled “Antitumor Potential of Xanthene Derivatives.”
His doctoral dissertation was supervised and evaluated by an esteemed committee consisting of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jasmin Šutković; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Altijana Hromić-Jahjefendić, Mentor; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Una Glamočlija from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Sarajevo; Asst. Prof. Dr. Betül Akçesme; and Asst. Prof. Dr. Lejla Mahmutović. Their academic guidance, expert evaluation, and support contributed significantly to the successful completion of this important research.
The dissertation focuses on the field of molecular biology and explores novel chemical compounds with potential applications in cancer therapy. Through this research, Dr. Sezer investigated key biological effects, including cytotoxicity, cell proliferation, gene expression, and protein expression, with the aim of identifying compounds that may inhibit or slow the development of tumor cells through different molecular mechanisms.
This successful defense represents an important academic milestone for Dr. Sezer and contributes to the broader research efforts within the field of genetics, bioengineering, and biomedical sciences at IUS.
